Hymns Reborn

Hymns Reborn is a Hymncharts series that gives public-domain hymn texts a brand-new life. Arranger and composer Don Chapman writes fresh, modern melodies for these timeless lyrics, carrying the great hymns of the faith to today’s congregations in a contemporary worship style.

Marvelous (I Stand Amazed)

“Marvelous (I Stand Amazed)” is Don Chapman’s Hymns Reborn setting of Charles H. Gabriel’s 1905 classic “My Savior’s Love” (I Stand Amazed in the Presence). Chapman pairs Gabriel’s original lyrics with a new melody built for modern worship: contemplative verses that leap into an explosive chorus, minor chords, and a striking diminished chord on the word “wonderful.” The bridge becomes the song’s crowning glory, spotlighting the very lines that inspired Gabriel to write the hymn: “He had no tears for His own griefs, but sweat drops of blood for mine.” Read the hymn history.

verse 1
I stand amazed in the presence
Of Jesus the Nazarene
I wonder how He could love me
A sinner condemned unclean
chorus
How marvelous How wonderful
And my song shall ever be
How marvelous How wonderful
Is my Savior's love for me
His love for me
verse 2
He took my sins and my sorrows
He made them His very own
He bore the burden to Calvary
And suffered and died alone
bridge
For me it was in the garden
He prayed not My will but Thine
Never tears for His own griefs
But sweat drops of blood for mine
I stand amazed in the presence
Of Jesus the Nazarene.
I wonder how He could love me,
A sinner, condemned, unclean.

How marvelous! How wonderful!
And my song shall ever be:
How marvelous! How wonderful!
Is my Savior's love for me,
His love for me.

He took my sins and my sorrows;
He made them His very own;
He bore the burden to Calvary,
And suffered and died alone.

As He knelt in the garden
He prayed not My will but Thine.
Never tears for His own griefs
But sweat drops of blood for mine.
