From Business to Blessings: The Life of John H. Sammis
John H. Sammis, born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1846, was a man whose life took a remarkable turn. Initially a businessman, Sammis felt called to ministry and became a Presbyterian minister. It was during this time that he played a pivotal role in the creation of a beloved hymn.
In 1886, Daniel B. Towner, the composer of “Trust and Obey,” was leading music at one of Dwight L. Moody’s famous revivals. When a young man stood up and declared, “I am not quite sure—but I am going to trust, and I am going to obey,” Towner jotted down the phrase and sent it to Sammis, who crafted the hymn’s lyrics around this simple yet profound statement of faith.
Sammis went on to pen over 100 hymns, most notably “He’s a Friend of Mine,” leaving a legacy of songs that continue to inspire trust and obedience in believers worldwide.
