Emily Devine Wilson: A Melodious Life of Faith
Emily Devine Wilson, born on May 24, 1865, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was a gifted composer and lyricist whose contributions to sacred music continue to inspire Christians around the world. Though few details about her life are known, the legacy she left through her hymns and melodies speaks volumes about her faith and dedication to serving God.
Emily, who often used the pseudonym “Mrs. J. G. Wilson,” was married to John G. Wilson, a Methodist minister and English immigrant. Together, they served the Methodist Philadelphia Conference, with John holding the positions of District Superintendent and pastor of the Wharton Memorial Methodist Church in Philadelphia. The couple’s shared devotion to their faith was evident in their frequent attendance at camp meetings in Ocean Grove, New Jersey, where Emily likely found inspiration for her musical compositions.
Emily’s most well-known composition is undoubtedly the tune for “When We All Get to Heaven,” a hymn that has stood the test of time and continues to be sung in churches across the globe. The melody’s infectious joy and anticipation of eternal life with Christ have made it a staple in hymnals and a favorite among congregations.
In addition to her most famous tune, Emily wrote the lyrics for several other hymns, including “As I Wandered on in Darkness,” “I Will Pilot Thee,” “Song of Praise to Christ Our King,” and “Sound the Clarion.” She also composed the tunes MARACAIBO, MARINA DEL REY, A SONG OF PRAISE and WHEN WE ALL GET TO HEAVEN showcasing her versatility and ability to craft music that uplifts the soul and glorifies God.
Emily Devine Wilson’s life may not be one of great fame or fortune, but her legacy is one of faith, love, and the power of music to inspire and unite. As we sing the words and melodies she created, we are reminded of the eternal hope we have in Christ and the joy that awaits us when we all get to Heaven.
